Speech therapy

*The speech language pathologists at Leeway School

are dedicated professionals, each of whom is licensed by New York State and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech language and Hearing Association. The department has therapists with additional training and experience in PECS, PROMPT, SOS and Augmentative Communication.

*The goal of speech-language therapy

is to maximize a child’s communicative abilities. Our speech language pathologists use current therapeutic techniques to work towards the remediation of varied communication disorders, including those in the areas of articulation, phonology, apraxia, receptive and expressive language, pragmatics, fluency, and voice.

When appropriate, augmentative forms of communication are introduced, including core boards,

point books, PECS books and speech generating apps.

*As students learn to use these forms of communication, they are provided with additional support by a Speech Language Pathologist who visits each classroom weekly.

*Many of the classes participate in our Food Explorers program which is held once a week in the classroom and run by a speech language pathologist.....

Food Explorers is a play-based program aimed at creating a fun and safe atmosphere to allow children the opportunity to explore new food colors, textures and tastes. Foods used in this program are chosen with respect to food allergies and other dietary restrictions.
